WEST MIFFLIN — The West Mifflin Area School District held its monthly school board work session and voting session on January 9 and Jan. 16, 2025, respectively. The next meeting is a work session on February 13, followed by a voting session on Feb. 20. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the cafeteria at West Mifflin Area Middle School.

January is School Director Recognition Month and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jeff Solomon thanked the Board and each member received a certificate of appreciation for their service.
“We’d like to thank these elected school directors for the time, dedication and efforts they give year-round to do what is necessary to ensure our schools remain a pathway to a promising future and for making the success of our children their priority,” Solomon said.
Notes from the meetings:
- The Board extended its heartfelt gratitude to Mark Bonacci, Assistant Principal, and Thomas Travis, Bill Dolcich, Mike Pienkoski, and Brandy Walasik, the dedicated high school custodians, for their extraordinary efforts in responding to and extinguishing the recent fire in the high school auditorium. The Board also expressed its deepest appreciation to the first responders who promptly answered the emergency call.
- The District is being honored with the 2023-24 Healthy Schools Recognition Program Award. Women for a Healthy Environment recognizes and celebrates the significant strides the District has made in creating green and healthy learning environments within the community.
During the presentation by Director of Finance and Operations Edward Wehrer, the Board:
- Approved Safe Schools Memorandum of Understanding with the West Mifflin Borough Police Department for Clara Barton Elementary School, Homeville Elementary School, West Mifflin Area Middle School and West Mifflin Area High School for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years.
- Approved a donation of $5,000.00 from Burlington Stores for the teachers at Clara Barton Elementary School to use as credit for classroom supplies on AdoptAClassroom.org.
In the Professional Personnel presentation, the Board:
- Approved the hiring of Isabelle Thompson, Social Studies Teacher at West Mifflin Area High School, pending receipt of all paperwork and clearances.
- Approved the transfer of Kyra Reinheimer from West Mifflin Area Middle School Life Skills 4-5 Teacher to Middle School Life Skills 6-8 Teacher.
- Approved the hiring of Hannah Hilla, West Mifflin Middle School Life Skills 4-5 Teacher, pending receipt of all paperwork and clearances.
