February School Board Meetings Recap

WEST MIFFLIN — The West Mifflin Area School District held its monthly school board work session and voting session on February 13 and 20, 2025, respectively. The next meeting is a work session on March 13, followed by a voting session on March 20. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the cafeteria at West Mifflin Area Middle School.

West Mifflin Area HS seniors Julia Lazar and Kenneth VanMeter provided the Student Board Representative report. 

 

Jason Piel, the district’s Director of Food and Nutrition and Delaney Caswell, Regional Manager for The Nutrition Group, provided an update on the food services program. They reported that after the menu changes made heading into this year, there has been greater participation in eating school meals by the students. Mr. Piel also reported that he has been meeting with groups of students in each building and planning special meal events at the schools.

 

They also reported that the high school cafeteria staff was one of three school district staffs amongst all The Nutrition Group’s districts to win the Moments Matter Award. There was a brief recognition, and each staff member received $100.

 

Notes from the meetings:

  • The Board approved the 2025-26 calendar. There are 182 student instruction days and 189 teacher days. The first day of classes will be Wednesday, August 20, 2025 and the last day of classes is Wednesday, May 27, 2026. Commencement is scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026, with the make-up date on May 22.
  • The Board approved the transition of the middle school and 9th grade Cheerleading clubs to be elevated under Athletics starting with the 2025-26 school year. 
  • The Board approved the creation of a Girls Flag Football program, with stipends for a head coach and assistant coach. 

 

During the presentation by Director of Finance and Operations Edward Wehrer, the Board:

  • Accepted a competitive grant from the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) for a pilot program involving cybersecurity services and equipment, with a value of $96,410.

 

In the Professional Personnel presentation, the Board:

  • Approved the hiring of Maribeth Myers, Special Education teacher at West Mifflin Area High School, pending receipt of all paperwork and clearances.
